Shared Bins

Good practice in allocating costs to businesses

WRAP research has shown that where the waste collector is engaged directly with the facilities management company, the charges are likely to be levied as per the collector’s standard charging range.

However, in situations where businesses are sharing bins and the collector or broker are issuing invoices to the separate businesses using those facilities there is an opportunity to consider the charging mechanism to alleviate costs and drive recycling performance.

As identified in the Waste Management Company, Exeter case study it is feasible to charge based on the volume generated by the individual businesses. Alternative charging mechanisms could be based on a space, volume, waste type, and sector specific drivers such as the numbers of covers served in hospitality industry businesses.
